Philadelphia Weekly Editor Releases Book on Philly’s Dive Bars

If you want to know where to get down and divey in Philly but don’t know where to start, don’t worry, the new book from Philadelphia Weekly music/food editor Brian McManus is here to help.

Philadelphia’s Best Dive Bars: Drinking and Diving in the City of Brotherly Love, which is excerpted in this week’s print edition of PW, is published by Ig Publishing, which has put out similar books in a handful of other cities.

In a Q&A about the book, McManus explains that the publisher usually works with Village Voice Media as a partner for the books, but with no VVM paper in Philly, Ig turned to VVM executive associate editor Andy Van De Voorde to recommend a local.

“I used to write a nightlife column for the Village Voice paper in Houston, so Andy recommended me,” McManus says. “Robert and I talked, I sent him some clips, and off we went. He knew I was the drunk for the job.”

He tells the Onion’s A.V. Club that he spent about a year writing the book, which he says could have been alternately titled, Brian Destroys His Marriage: Drunken Tales of “No, No, I’m Coming Home RIGHT NOW”.

“I went to over 100 bars, but the book has 96 reviews in it. It took me summer of ’09 to summer of ’10 to get it all done,” McManus says. “My liver is still holding a grudge.”
