Two New Members Elected to AAN Board

Editor/Co-Owners Bingo Barnes of Boise Weekly and Mark Zusman of Willamette Week were the two newest members elected to the AAN board during the association’s annual meeting held Saturday morning in San Diego.

Barnes won an at-large seat in this year’s only contested election, which had three candidates vying for two positions. The other at-large seat was won by incumbent Penelope Huston Baer, classified manager of Santa Barbara Independent. Huston Baer was elected to a two-year term, while Barnes’ seat will expire at next year’s convention. The third, unsuccessful contender was Joe Piasecki, deputy editor of Pasadena Weekly.

Eight others who ran unopposed were elected to the board. Kenneth Neill, publisher of The Memphis Flyer, became president, Stephen Leon, editor and publisher of Metroland, became vice president.

Four incumbents kept their seats. They are Classified Advertising Chair Robby Robbins, classified manager of Independent Weekly; Display Advertising Chair Carol Flagg, advertising director of Austin Chronicle; Editorial Chair Patricia Calhoun, editor of Westword, and First Amendment Chair Tim Redmond, executive editor of the San Francisco Bay Guardian.

Paula Routly, co-publisher and -editor of Seven Days, gave up her at-large seat to become Membership Chair. Zusman was elected as Organization/Bylaws Chair, filling the seat vacated by Leon.
