The AltWeekly Awards honor superior journalism and graphic design among alternative newsweeklies across the United States and Canada. The contest seeks to promote excellence by recognizing work that is well written, incisively reported and effectively challenges established orthodoxies.
The first contest was organized in 1996. Each year since, awards have been presented in more than a dozen categories, with two circulation divisions in each category. For a complete list of previous winners', click here.
Information for the each year's contest is posted in early December. Finalists are announced the following May and the winners are revealed at an awards luncheon during AAN's annual convention in June. In the fall, AAN publishes a new volume of Best AltWeekly Writing and Design. The book features the text of the winning articles, full-color shots of winning designs as well as the bios of contributors and judges.
