AAN members are eligible for a special discounted rate to the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction ConferÂence, taking place July 18-20 at the Hilton DFW Lakes Executive ConÂference Center in Grapevine, Texas.
The annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction ConferÂence has grown into one of the nation’s pre-eminent gatherings of writers. The theme of this year’s conference is “Narratives on the Cutting Edge: Writing about Science, Technology, Medicine and Innovation. Keynote speakers are David Quammen, contributing writer for National Geographic, and Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Lawrence Wright and Sheri Fink.
There will be a special training session for AAN members, conducted by Stephen Fried, professor at Columbia University School of Journalism and the author of Bitter Pills: Inside the Hazardous World of Legal Drugs.
Tim Elfrink, the managing editor of Miami New Times and co-author of Blood Sport: Alex Rodriguez, Biogenesis, and the Quest to End the Steroid Era, is one of the Mayborn’s speakers. The conference runs a national writing contest, awarding $20,000 in cash prizes for personal essays, reported narratives and book manuscripts. The conference is hosted by the Frank W. Mayborn Graduate InstiÂtute of Journalism at the University of North Texas.
“This is the best longform writing workshop in America — easily — and longform is what we will always do better than the enemy,” said Chuck Strouse, editor of Miami New Times and AAN editorial chair. “I encourage every AAN paper to send someone. It’ll pay in spades!”
AAN members who register before the early registration deadline on May 1 will receive the special rate of $324, a $50 discount off the general admission price. There will not be an AAN Writers Workshop this year.
