Baltimore City Paper Acquired By Baltimore Sun Media Group

The Baltimore Sun Media Group will acquire Baltimore City Paper, the company announced today. The Tribune Co. subsidiary publishes the daily Baltimore Sun, as well as several other Baltimore-area community newspapers and magazines.

City Paper had been up for sale since August, when Times-Shamrock announced that it was selling its alt-weekly division. The four other Times-Shamrock papers were sold in December.

The 37-year-old alt-weekly will move its operations to the Baltimore Sun offices, however the company says both papers will maintain separate editorial and sales teams.

In addition, longtime City Paper veteran Jennifer Marsh will return to serve as general manager. Marsh spent 24 years with the paper, working her way from editorial intern in 1988 to eventually being named publisher in 2011. She left the paper last year and joined the Baltimore Sun Media Group as Niche Products Director.

From the press release:

“Clearly, Jen knows and understands the City Paper audience and was integral in
helping to make it the success it is today,” said Judy Berman, Senior Vice President
Sales and Marketing for BSMG. “We’re delighted she has agreed to join the City
Paper team and again take part in the growth of the city’s alternative voice.”

“We couldn’t have found a better buyer for the City Paper,” said Scott Lynett, Publisher
of Times-Shamrock Communications. “We’re confident that The Baltimore Sun Media
Group will maintain what we’ve worked so hard to establish – an independent source
of news and opinions on local politics, communities, culture and arts in Baltimore.”

Ownership of the paper will officially transfer on March 12.
