Fort Worth Weekly, Houston Press, and San Antonio Current took honors in several categories at the Houston Press Club's Lone Star Awards.
Steven Thrasher has been named Journalist of the Year by the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association for his work appearing in the Village Voice, the New York Times, and Out magazine.
The paper picked up six first-place awards, 23 total, from the Utah Headliners Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Miami New Times, Jackson Free Press and The Memphis Flyer each received first-place Green Eyeshade awards from the SPJ southeastern division.
In a reception featuring bourbon shots and vending machine undergarments, co-hosts Enrique Limon, Joe MacLeod, and Dan Gibson announced the winners of the 2012 AltWeekly Awards.
Pacific Northwest Inlander picked up the General Excellence award.
AAN received 1,108 entries from 90 of its member publications. The winners will be announced on Friday, June 8, during an afternoon reception at the AAN Convention in Detroit.
Monterey County Weekly took first place for General Excellence.
Houston Press, L.A. Weekly, and Phoenix New Times each came out as winners in the Western Publishing Association's Maggie Awards.
