Alexandria Rocha's story about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students won a 2006 John Swett Award for Media Excellence. The awards, given by the California Teachers Association, recognize "excellence in covering public education."
In the East Bay Press Club's 2006 Excellence in Print Journalism Contest, the Express finished first in nine categories: sports feature, business feature, technology feature, general news, columnist, long feature, lifestyle feature, criticism or reviewing, and profile. According to a press release, the awards are "somewhat unique in that all print media organizations are judged against each other -- there are no separate categories for circulation or for magazines." Winners were announced Friday evening at a banquet in Oakland.
AAN members won 15 first-place awards in the California Association of Newspaper Publishers' annual contest, led by Palo Alto Weekly, which took home five firsts. Chico News & Review placed first in in three categories; Pacific Sun won two; and Metro Santa Cruz, North Coast Journal, Sacramento News & Review, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and the Santa Barbara Independent each finished in first in one category. The awards were presented in a ceremony Saturday evening.
In its annual list of 10 newspapers that "do it right," E&P has singled out the San Francisco Bay Guardian as "the archetype of the politically involved, locally focused alternative newspaper that's an alert and occasionally rabid watchdog." Editor/publisher Bruce Brugmann tells E&P that he worries that he and his wife and Bay Guardian co-founder Jean Dibble "are almost anachronisms" in today's media environment, with their brand of crusading alt-journalism. "Every good newspaper man ought to be controversial," Brugmann says.
The paper took first in the General News/Enterprise Reporting, and placed in three other categories. The awards were presented by the Hawaii chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists Friday evening.
The alt-weekly placed first in nine categories in this year's Metro Louisville Journalism Awards: business reporting, minority affairs, editorial writing, column writing, feature photography, sports photography, review/criticism, headline writing, and page design. The winners of the awards, which are sponsored by the Metro Louisville chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, were announced last night.
In the Detroit Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists' annual awards, the alt-weekly finished first in three categories (criticism; cover design; spread design). The paper also took home two second-place (cover design; editorial page design) and three third-place (investigative reporting; feature news reporting; news columnist) awards in the competition.
In the 2007 Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards, Cleveland's Scene won in the Best Non-Daily Newspaper: Alternatives category, with Cincinnati CityBeat coming in second. Other first place finishes: Cleveland Free Times' Michael Gill in Essays; The Other Paper's Karen E. Graves in Reviews/Criticism; and the Scene's Pete Kotz in Column Writing. The awards, sponsored by the Press Club of Cleveland, were presented at a reception on Friday.
Richard Connelly was honored in the Humor (under 100,000 circulation) category by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. Winners were announced Saturday night.
In the annual Society of Professional Journalists Utah Headliners Awards, reporter Ted McDonough took first in two categories: Best Newspaper Reporter and Government Reporting. Other first place finishes for the Weekly: Katherine Biele in Consumer Reporting; Bill Frost in Headline Writing; Ben Fulton in Personality Profile; and Shane Johnson in Criminal Justice Reporting. Winners were announced last Friday night.
