Hot off the heels of winning three national awards, Calgary’s Fast Forward Weekly had a strong showing at the recent Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association awards.
The paper took home first place for arts and culture writing for Suzy Thompson’s look at financial and personnel issues at Glenbow Museum (“Struggles of the Glenbow,†July 19, 2012); second place for best environmental writing for Drew Anderson’s look at pipeline development in Alberta (“Staunching the flow,†Sept. 13, 2012) and for excellence in education writing for Suzy Thompson’s story on bullying and new provincial legislation (“Education act and bullies,” Nov. 1, 2012); and third place for best feature column for Jeff Gailus’ look at the conflict between bears and oilsands (“The Great Canadian oilsands black bear massacre,†March 1, 2012), and for the healthy communities journalism award for Suzy Thompson’s examination of worker dissatisfaction amidst Alberta’s EMS workers (“EMS workers vent their frustration,†Jan. 5, 2012).
