Miami New Times, The Memphis Flyer and Jackson Free Press took several awards during the 61st Green Eyeshade Awards, which honor media in eleven Southeast states.
Miami New Times took home first-place awards in business, technology, public affairs, and politics reporting, as well as a second in court reporting and a third in investigative reporting. Staff writer Gus Garcia’s story, “Blow Hard,” was named best entry overall in the nondaily division as well as best feature story. The paper also took a first in sportswriting, and second-place in public service, criticism, and serious commentary.
Two firsts went to The Memphis Flyer, one in general news reporting and another in criticism. The paper also took three third-place awards in serious commentary, editorials, and courts and the law reporting.
Jackson Free Press took first-place in the courts and the law reporting and serious commentary categories, second-place in politics reporting and third-place in feature writing.
