San Francisco “Butt Guardians” Steal the Show at Nude-In

“If you go bare, put ‘er there.”

This PSA, printed on an insert in the San Francisco Bay Guardian‘s latest issue, reminded participants in last week’s “Nude-In” to maintain proper towel etiquette.

San Francisco’s acceptance of public nudity has long been a draw for those tourists looking for a singular experience in the city. Recently, the number of public nudists increased to the point where city supervisor Scott Wiener began a push for legislation prohibiting nudity in restaurants.

But his statement that legislation is necessary to make nudists use towels when sitting in public spaces ruffled the feathers of the clothes-free community.

They agree that the accessory of a towel is basic conscientiousness, but say that laws forcing their use are gratuitous.

Rather than deter nudists, the proposed legislation has inspired more to join the frenzy. At the recent Nude-In, many could be seen sporting towels bearing the trademark, “The Butt Guardian.”

“It’s amazing what you can do with a little creativity and $50 for silk-screen supplies,” said Bay Guardian executive editor Tim Redmond.
