SF Weekly was the recipient of two Excellence in Journalism Awards, courtesy of the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Columnist Matt Smith was recognized in the Economy category for demonstrating “how private trade schools, funded by stimulus money, leave students deeply in debt without providing them the skills they need to compete in a rapidly changing global economy,” and John Birdsall took honors in the Online Arts & Culture Criticism category for his coverage of the local food scene.
