Miami New Times, Philadelphia City Paper, and Westword have been named as Sigma Delta Chi Award honorees by the national Society of Professional Journalists.
Westword editor Patricia Calhoun took top honors in the Feature Reporting category for telling the story of Kristen Stillman, whose four children were fathered by the man who had raped her repeatedly since the time she was twelve.
Ralph Cipriano of Philadelphia City Paper was recognized in the Non-Deadline Reporting category for “The Billion Dollar Boondoggle,” an exposé of Philadelphia’s Deferred Retirement Option Plan for municipal employees.
Miami New Times editor Chuck Strouse won first place in the General Column Writing category for work that appeared over the course of 2010.
Alt-weekly cartoonists also fared well in the competition. All of the winners will be recognized in a ceremony in New Orleans on Sept. 24.
