Jim Nesbitt, a veteran of 23 years at daily newspapers, has been named editor of the Riverfront Times in St. Louis. He replaces Safir Ahmed, who is leaving the paper "to pursue other professional interests," a New Times news release says.
Village Voice Media names Dana Faust associate publisher/sales and marketing at Seattle Weekly. Faust has 18 years experience in display and classified advertising at The New York Times.
The San Francisco Bay Guardian has axed its highly paid "Ask Isadora" sex advice column, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Isadora Alman tells the Chronicle's Dan Fost that she "didn't see it coming." The Chronicle also reports that the Bay Guardian has had layoffs and is reducing its leased space during this rough economic environment for media companies.
Erik Wemple, a former Washington City Paper senior editor, returns to become editor, the paper announces today. Wemple replaces Howard Witt, who left the paper for the Washington bureau of the Chicago Tribune. Richard Byrne, interim editor and media columnist, is leaving the paper to become executive editor of TheGlobalist.com.
Michael Sigman, president/publisher of LA/OC Weekly, announces that the papers have brought veteran advertising executives on board at the two Village Voice Media papers. Dar Brown has been named associate publisher/advertising for LA Weekly, and Melissa Fisher has been named advertising director for OC Weekly.
Seattle Weekly Publisher Alisa Cromer has resigned, citing disagreements with Village Voice Media management about how the paper should be run. VVM CEO David Schneiderman tells AAN News Cromer's resignation "did not have to do with any financial, budgetary, or personnel issues." The shake-up means Schneiderman will spend time out West to oversee Seattle Weekly and LA Weekly, while Group Publisher Albie Del Favero will concentrate on papers in Minneapolis, Cleveland and Nashville.
Washington City Paper is getting great resumes for Howard Witt's old editor's job, and for sales positions, because of media layoffs, says Jane Levine, CEO of City Paper's parent, Chicago Reader Inc. Levine tells the Washington Business Journal: "It's a great time to be hiring. There aren't many silver linings to the clouds that are out there, but this is one of them."
A New York Press veteran takes the helm as publisher. Kim Granowitz succeeds Michael Cohen, who has returned to Miami New Times.
