Independent Weekly's acquisition of Raleigh's alt-weekly the Spectator will allow the newly merged Independent to beef up its A&E coverage and leaves Creative Loafing with more cash for its four AAN-member papers. "One of us ultimately had to give in to create a single financially successful paper, and we yielded to local ownership," said Ben Eason, CEO of Creative Loafing Inc.
Richard Hart will jump from the Raleigh News & Observer to become editor of Independent Weekly, Publisher Sioux Watson says. He replaces David Madison, who was named editor in October 2001. Madison has decided to return to Montana to rejoin his wife, Katie.
Unable to pay the printer to publish last week's issue, Yesse! Communications President and Bloomington Independent Publisher Craig Hitchcock announced Friday that the paper would "suspend operations ... with the hope of restarting in March." Hitchcock tells the Bloomington Herald-Times that a post-Sept. 11 decline in advertising revenue of 15-20 percent forced his hand. The closure leaves Yesse! with two papers, Dayton, Ohio's Impact Weekly and Springfield's Illinois Times.

Rybak, erstwhile publisher of the defunct Twin Cities Reader, was elected mayor of Minneapolis, and Charles Meeker, brother of Willamette Week publisher Richard Meeker and a former Independent Weekly shareholder, seized the reins in Raleigh, N.C. Not since former Pacific Sun reporter Barbara Boxer was elected to the U.S. Senate have AANies made such political hay.
Independent Weekly names David Madison editor. Madison is a native of Chapel Hill, N.C., and a veteran alt-weekly writer and editor. Publisher Sioux Watson says the only person happier about the hire than the Indy staff is Madison’s mama, who is glad her boy is coming home.
A couple of weeks ago Lee Enterprise's daily paper in Missoula changed the publication day of its weekend section and started to distribute it as a free, stand-alone paper. In a publisher's note, Missoula Independent's Matt Gibson says the move is "a transparent attempt by the Missoulian to impede the growth" of his paper, and calls it unethical, anti-competitive and "probably illegal". He promises that Lee is "going to find themselves in a fight so fierce and unrelenting, they’ll wish they’d picked on somebody their own size."
