New York, N.Y. – October 6, 2003 -The Village Voice, the nation’s largest alternative weekly newspaper, is pleased to announce the appointment of Charles McNulty as Senior Editor, Theater/Obies, effective immediately.

In addition to his editorial role, McNulty will be responsible for administering the Obies, the Village Voice’s annual award show honoring Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions worthy of distinction.

McNulty began his career at the Village Voice in 1992 as intern to long-time theater editor and Obie award chairman Ross Wetzsteon, subsequently becoming the Assistant to the Obie award panel in 1995 and an Obie judge in 2000. He became a contributing writer at the Voice in 2000.

An Assistant Professor at Brooklyn College, McNulty is the head of the MFA program in Dramaturgy and Theater Criticism. He has previously taught at Yale, NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and The New School for Social Research.

McNulty’s theater writing has also appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Variety, American Theatre, Modern Drama, Hot Review, and the Yale triquarterly Theater, where he is a Contributing Editor.

A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, he was awarded the John Gassner prize for Excellence in Critical Writing and holds a Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Yale University in Dramaturgy and Theater Criticism. He currently resides in Manhattan.
