BOSTON, MA — DigBoston announced today that it will be restructuring its core media
business, and that editor Dan McCarthy will be let go on September 29 as part of the
shuffle.
McCarthy came to DigBoston after nearly five years at the helm of the Boston city
edition of NYC-based men’s lifestyle website UrbanDaddy.com, which he relocated
from Manhattan for and launched in 2009, and maintained as city editor and chief
writer until his departure for DigBoston in 2013.
“The decision to restructure our core operations and in the process temporarily
eliminate the editor position in no way reflects on Dan’s talent, commitment to
producing great journalism, and overall quality of work since he came on board,†said
founder and publisher Jeff Lawrence.
As part of the restructuring, Lawrence will assume the role as publisher and editor
while the company reevaluates the editorial approach and delivery. In addition to
McCarthy, two other positions have been eliminated, one in production and the other
in sales.
“I’ve had the pleasure of taking the editorial reigns several times over the last 15 years,
and following in McCarthy’s footsteps will no doubt be one of the most difficult to
follow yet. Once we have a new plan in place however, I will be looking for someone to
assume the editorial leadership again,†said Lawrence.
McCarthy will stay on to produce one more edition before he departs. DigBoston’s
current News and Features editor, Chris Faraone, will remain on staff at the paper in
his current role and will assist in creating the new organization.
“I’ve had an incredible ride over the last two years, overhauling and growing
DigBoston’s editorial footprint to where it is today,†explained McCarthy. “With a really
talented and hardworking team I oversaw two redesigns of the print newspaper, a total
website overhaul and relaunch, published several high-profile local and national
scoops, and assembled numerous special-issue packages. All while producing the kind
of sharp timely content that Greater Boston craves week in and week out. I couldn’t be
more proud of what I’ve accomplished, and I wish the team well. Now if you’ll excuse
me, I need to go find a job.â€
The restructuring will allow DigBoston to continue offering superior content to its core
audience – specifically investigative features, media criticism, music, film and
performing arts – while also ensuring the sustainability of the company as it creates
new opportunities and invests in long term growth and strategy.
Founded in 1999, DigBoston is the city’s only alternative voice, producing an award
winning weekly print publication, online community, and social media bullhorn that
celebrates humor, news and nightlife throughout Boston and beyond.
