At this year's conference, food for the writer's soul came in the form of seminars, personal writing critiques and mounds of barbecued meat. Whether at Merle's (pictured) or the less sauce-stained environs of Northwestern University, editorial types rolled up their sleeves and got down to business.
The Advocate, a Boston-based magazine, reported last week on the Dig's decision to run a crossword puzzle titled "The Jews." Written by managing editor Eric Solomon, the puzzle includes clues such as "Oy, we killed the (blank) of God!" Solomon tells the Advocate that "I'm Jewish, and I don't think [the puzzle is] offensive." He adds: "If we're not in a society where we can make fun of ourselves, that's sad." Robert Trestan of the Anti-Defamation League tells the Advocate that "some people might find [the puzzle] offensive, but I don't think it's anti-Semitic."
Construction of a light rail in downtown Phoenix, where the event has taken place for the past 29 years, forced the move. This year's race -- expected to attract about 10,000 participants -- will be run through Tempe, where the alt-weekly chain has held its annual Music Showcase for the past decade.
