As AAN papers scramble to meet the Feb. 8 deadline for the 2010 AltWeekly Awards journalism competition, entrants should know that several of the winning entries will be published in book form in 2011. AAN has just signed a contract with Northwestern University Press to publish a book titled Best AltWeekly Writing 2009 and 2010, which will feature a selection of first-place winning pieces from several categories, as well as a number of "How I Got That Story" interviews with winning authors.
The 2010 AltWeekly Awards is now accepting entries. The contest website opened this morning and will close on the contest deadline, Monday, Feb. 8, 2010 at 11 pm (EST).

There are now three separate blog categories: Group/Staff Blog, Individual Blog, and Music Blog. There is also a new award for the best use of Multimedia. The Wild Card category is Health Care.

The judges came from academia and the newsroom, and they reviewed entries from as far away as Mexico City and Beirut. Many judges began their careers at an alt-weekly and several were fellows at the Academy for Alternative Journalism. A selection of their remarks on the winning entries has been compiled into a pdf document.
L.A. Weekly led the large-circulation division for the second year in a row with four first-place wins, while Santa Fe Reporter led the small-circulation division, also with four first-place wins.
The finalists for the last three AltWeekly Award categories are now in. The leaders in the large-circulation and small-circulation divisions each picked up an additional award, with The Village Voice increasing its overall award count to ten, and the Santa Fe Reporter swelling its total to six.
The 2009 award winners come from 57 different member papers, including one paper that will be receiving honors in its first year of eligibility. The final placement of the winners will be announced at the AltWeekly Awards luncheon to be held on Friday, June 26 during the 32nd annual AAN Convention in Tucson.

This year’s Wild Card category is Election Coverage. The winners will be announced at the 32nd Annual AAN Convention taking place June 25-27, 2009 in Tucson, Ariz.
