In what publisher Sally Freeman is calling the “largest distribution of condoms ever” in Idaho’s history, Boise Weekly is including a free condom in each copy of this week’s issue.
Freeman says she has wanted to do this for several years, but couldn’t find the right partner, which turned out to be an organization called A.L.P.H.A. (Allies Linked for the Prevention of HIV and AIDS).
“Distributing condoms in such a public way will not be without controversy, but it is an important way to address an issue that often goes overlooked by people who don’t think they are affected by HIV/AIDS,” she writes. “What better way to get people talking about condoms and why they are important than providing one to every Boise Weekly reader?”
The condoms were donated by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which also sponsored the costs of the project. Volunteers from A.L.P.H.A. “contributed more than 2,000 hours” to attach the condoms to postcards, which the Weekly‘s printer then manually inserted into each copy of the paper.
