Maui Time Weekly, Maui’s only independent locally-owned island-wide paper, is pleased to welcome new editor Jacob Shafer. Maui Time will look to expand its growing reputation as one of Hawaii’s finest alternative sources for news and entertainment with the hiring.
Shafer, who replaces outgoing editor Anthony Pignataro, is a native of Northern California. After graduating from San Rafael’s Dominican University with a degree in political science with a journalism emphasis, Shafer served as calendar editor and later staff reporter at The Pacific Sun, one of the nation’s oldest and most acclaimed alt-weeklies. His writing at the Sun covered a diverse array of topics, ranging from features on the Bay Area music, theater and film scene to investigative pieces on issues like the local cost of the Iraq war and clandestine marijuana operations in the county’s rural western reaches.
Shafer has also contributed as a freelance writer to various print and online publications, and is a contributing writer and columnist for the Humboldt County weekly The Independent. He comes to Maui with his wife and son.
“Jacob has a firm grasp of important environmental issues that are so critical to our delicate and precious market, an isolated island in the middle of the Pacific. He contributes a maturity level way beyond his years to this gift that we offer our community,” says Maui Time publisher Tommy Russo.
