New York Press Loses Web Site in Attack

Server connects to lower Manhattan

New York Press’s web site was down from the time of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, until late Monday, Sept. 24, Publisher Russ Smith reports.

“We also have a screwed-up phone situation, which means no e-mail at the office,” Smith says in an e-mail he sent to AAN News from his home computer. “Total logistical nightmare, but our paper’s on the streets.”

The paper’s server is connected through Church Street in lower Manhattan, near the site of the World Trade Center “crater.”

Smith also tells Jim Romanesko’s Media News that his family “was evacuated from our Tribeca apartment at noon last Tuesday after watching the carnage from the street and our roof. Below Canal Street.now resembles an especially weird episode of the Twilight Zone.”
