Salt Lake City Weekly won a total of 19 awards in the Utah Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists' annual awards on June 12. The Weekly's Stephen Dark was named Best Newspaper Reporter (his colleague Ted McDonough received an honorable mention in the same category). "Dark had the most diverse and interesting subject matter," the judges wrote. "His ability to tell a story in a clean and compelling manner also stood out." The alt-weekly also won first-place awards for Consumer Reporting, Government Reporting and Military Reporting.
The Reader, named for the Twin Cities alt-weekly that closed in 1997, is a local news aggregator being developed as a separate entity from the paper's Blotter blog. "This is it's own product, and it's meant to be a hub for finding the most important stories in the Twin Cities quickly," City Pages editor Kevin Hoffman tells AAN News in an email. "Whereas Blotter is highly voice driven, this is more like a map where the reader decides where to visit." The Reader apes the look of the notorious Drudge Report, a move Hoffman says was intentional. "The Drudge Report has long been the top national aggregator online, even for people who don't agree with Drudge's politics," he says. "We think that this is the format that people are used to for aggregators, and wanted to do something similar for local news."
A 12-member jury ruled earlier this month that the Columbia City Paper libeled a local attorney in a 2007 article, and awarded her $40,000 in damages. The suit named as defendants City Paper's two co-owners, publisher Paul Blake and editor-in-chief Todd Morehead, as well as the publication itself. Blake tells Columbia Free Times they will "definitely" appeal the jury decision. "We're pretty confident the First Amendment will prevail," he says.
Responding to yesterday's blog post by Washington City Paper editor Erik Wemple, Arianna Huffington tells the New York Times' David Carr that someone at HuffPo did contact City Paper to ask that the new blog posts on their HuffPo April Fool's parody be taken down, but that they "never complained" about the page linking back to HuffPo. "Bottom line: We didn't -- and don't -- have a problem with someone having fun at our expense," she says. "Indeed, we loved it and complimented it."
Faithful AAN.org readers may recall that on April Fool's Day, City Paper reworked its website to ape HuffPo's look. The parody -- The Huffington City Paper -- even received kudos from HuffPo itself. Now -- a day after the publication of a well-read City Paper column criticizing HuffPo -- the aggregator is asking the alt-weekly to remove the lightly trafficked page from its archives, in part because it contains a link to HuffPo. "Never thought I'd be scolded by a Huffington Post official for linking," writes editor Erik Wemple. "But I was!"
Washington City Paper classified manager Heather McAndrews says that in the first week of May, adult ads were up 38 percent over the same time last year; City Pages publisher Mark Bartel says adult ads there have "almost doubled;" and SF Weekly's adult ad count has jumped from 160 before Craigslist's new policy went into effect to 910 last week. One woman who advertises in both City Paper and Craigslist tells the alt-weekly that Craigslist's "standard is no good because you cannot really describe who you are."
The Twin Cities alt-weekly did well on Thursday night, when the Minnesota chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists held their annual Page One Awards banquet to honor the best journalism in the state. City Pages took home 27 awards, including 15 first-place honors. The impressive showing led MinnPost.com media critic David Brauer to wonder if City Pages might be the best newspaper in Minnesota.
Pittsburgh City Paper will be able to see the court order sealing details of the divorce between local publisher Richard Mellon Scaife and his wife, but it won't get access to the official schedule of proceedings. The alt-weekly hoped to see the docket "in order to keep abreast of future developments" in the case. MORE: City Paper editor Chris Potter weighs in on a "surreal few days."
Las Vegas Weekly has the best entertainment website with fewer than one million unique monthly visitors, and Baltimore City Paper is the best weekly newspaper-affiliated website, according to the 2009 EPpy Awards, which "honor the best websites in the media world." This is City Paper's second EPpy -- it won the Editor & Publisher and Mediaweek sponsored contest in 2006 as well.
