At a recent American Press Institute seminar on "MediaPreneurship," Don Farley, publisher of Baltimore City Paper, and Brad Moore, general manager of the commuter daily RedEye, shared their insights on creating a successful "alternative" print product. (A summary is posted on API's Web site.) Among other things, Farley suggests that it is more important to hire passionate employees than experienced employees, and that change should be viewed as opportunity. Most tellingly, Farley says that "if you have to try to be edgy, you're not edgy"; meanwhile, Moore recounts how prior to the launch of RedEye, staffers identified words they "wanted people to identify with [the] new product, including 'savvy,' 'edgy,' and 'engaged.'"
"Over the years I paid plenty of people plenty of money to do nothing around here, and I don't want to become one of them," says Salt Lake City Weekly's owner, John Saltas, in his July 27 column. Saltas is explaining why he hasn't quit writing for the Weekly even though he's too old. "Writing for a newspaper like this one -- a newspaper with a youngish readership and embedded in a community with one of America’s youngest demographics -- should be, in my opinion, a task left to those who share the basic reference points with that readership," Saltas says. His solution: to hold a "Replace John Contest," in which readers are invited to write Saltas' column for him. Saltas isn't claiming that he will step down permanently, but the winner will be published at least once and will take home a cash prize.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Matt Bartel was invited to Katie Couric's town meeting despite a ban on media, because the local CBS affiliate that organized the event "apparently didn't recognize the name Bartel (ubiquitous in Twin Cities publishing circles)." AAN members may be familiar with Matt's uncle, City Pages Publisher Mark Bartel, or his parents Tom Bartel and Kris Henning, who co-founded City Pages as well as its competitor, The Rake. After learning that Matt Bartel had a blog, staffers confiscated his pen, but he reports that he wouldn't have used it anyway. "I didn't get anything out of it, which is exactly what the evening news is," Bartel says.
Gadi Dechter, author of the Baltimore City Paper's "Media Circus" column, will no longer write for the weekly. "Dechter did such a fine job reporting on The Sun ... over the past couple of years that the daily recently up and hired him," notes City Paper Editor Lee Gardner in this week's issue. (The editor's note is here, bottom of the page.) Most notably, in January Dechter exposed instances of plagiarism by veteran Sun columnist Michael Olesker, who then resigned.
Erik Wemple's coworkers at Washington City Paper had been "excited about the opportunity" for him to become editor of the Village Voice, he tells Mediabistro's FishbowlDC a week after changing his mind about taking the position. That doesn't mean they were anxious for him to leave: "Proof of Wemple's worth to the City Paper can be found in the fact that you'll be hard pressed -- and trust us, we've tried -- to find a CityPaper employee who's not pleased to have Wemple back in the saddle," FishbowlDC Editor Patrick W. Gavin writes. Wemple does acknowledge that "there are clearly legitimate questions about whether my head is in the game at this stage" -- questions that he intends to answer by doing solid work.
