Jane Dalea-Kahn, former LA advertising director for Vogue magazine, has been named publisher of New Times Los Angeles, New Times announced today. She replaces Jim Rizzi, who "will be leaving New Times after contributing many years of work toward the company's growth in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver and Phoenix," the company says in a news release. Josh Cooperman, formerly a sales executive for Clear Channel radio powerhouses KFI and KLAC, joins the paper as retail sales director.
Yesse! Communications, in bankruptcy since spring of 2001, is struggling to keep its last two papers alive, but bounced paychecks and unpaid medical claims have sent another flood of employees out the door. Now managers are pointing fingers. Kerry Farley, vice president of operations, blames Michael Stern, Impact’s former business manager. Others blame both Farley and Yesse! President Craig Hitchcock for indifferent management and neglect. Farley and Hitchcock insist the Dayton, Ohio, weekly is still viable.
David Comden, group publisher of the renamed Southland Publishing Inc. (formerly Ventura Newspaper, Inc.), says San Diego is a “big-boy market.” The purchase of SLAMM, a San Diego music biweekly, gives Southland a chance to play in the big boys’ lot. Comden says it’s likely SLAMM will be transformed into a AAN-style alternative newsweekly.
"I think we've all had enough of me," Riverfront Times founder Ray Hartmann says as he bids adieu to the paper after 25 years and one million words. "Through the years, we have fought a lot of fights, told a lot of stories. We challenged the elitist, closed Father-knows-best decision-making process of Civic Progress," Hartmann writes in his valedictory column. "We challenged their siphoning of millions of dollars in tourism funds to something called the VP Fair. There were environmental issues, race issues, social issues. Most recently, there was a five-year battle against the late, great stadium scam, arguably my favorite issue ever." Hartmann says the RFT flourished because it reflected "the real St. Louis."
Richard Hart will jump from the Raleigh News & Observer to become editor of Independent Weekly, Publisher Sioux Watson says. He replaces David Madison, who was named editor in October 2001. Madison has decided to return to Montana to rejoin his wife, Katie.
Jeff Truesdell, who had been with Orlando Weekly since its birth in 1990, was abruptly fired this week after a spat with Publisher Mike Johnson. Truesdell says he and Johnson had a tense relationship, but says the publisher never interfered with the editorial side of the paper. Johnson says he respects Truesdell but won't talk about the argument that led to the termination.
Ken Stocker comes from Denver's Westword to the Riverfront Times, on a mission to raise public awareness of the alt-weekly and thereby boost sales. The 12-year New Times veteran has a green sales staff, but he's convinced the paper is "poised and ready to make a big push." He replaces Terry Coe, who resigned from the Riverfront Times after 17 years.
Kiki Yablon, who plays guitar in a punk rock band, has been promoted to managing editor of the Chicago Reader. She has been on the Reader's staff since 1996, directing the alt-weekly's music coverage, the Chicago Sun Times reports. Editor Alison True says Yablon is "perfect" for the job and won the position over a host of outside applicants. True has also promoted three Reader associate editors to senior editor: Holly Greenhagen, Kitry Krause and Laura Molzahn.
