ESPN.com Acquires Sportsjones.com From Newcity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUST 23, 2001

ESPN.COM ACQUIRES SPORTSJONES.COM

ESPN.com, the leading sports site, has completed the acquisition of SportsJones.com, an Internet sports magazine featuring insight from a variety of alternative viewpoints and voices. Daily content from the SportsJones team will be integrated throughout ESPN.com beginning Friday, Aug. 31, and SportsJones.com will cease to publish independently. SportsJones.com was previously owned by Newcity, a media company that operates a network of sites and a flagship newspaper in Chicago.

“We are committed to providing fans the most extensive and informative coverage available online, and the content SportsJones.com offers will add even more value to the quality and variety our users have come to expect,” said John Skipper, senior vice president and general manager, ESPN.com.

“ESPN.com readers expect the best, and the SportsJones team is dedicated to producing material of the highest quality. We will add even more dimensions to what is already the best sports site in the world,” said SportsJones.com editor and publisher Royce Webb, who will join ESPN.com as a senior editor along with SportsJones.com editors Jeff Merron and Eric Neel.

SportsJones.com has been named “Best of the Web” by Brill’s Content – dubbed “an elegant sports site with smart fare for fans” – and is a past nominee for the prestigious Webby Award.
