Schindler takes over as editor

Folio Weekl”s longtime editor Bob Snell has left the paper to become a professional firefighter, and Anne Schindler, formerly associate editor, succeeds him, effective this week.

“In the seven and a half years since Bob joined the paper, he has helped it become not only one of the strongest news voices in the region, but a nationally recognized model for alternative journalism,” says Publisher Sam Taylor. “His leadership has helped the paper win 14 editorial awards from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, and put Folio Weekly at the vanguard of investigative reporting in the Southeast.”

Snell begins a yearlong course in professional firefighting, including emergency medicine, next week and does not yet know where exactly he will work as a firefighter, Schindler says.

Snell, a former Peace Corps volunteer, has “a real sensibility about hands-on helping people,” she says, qualities that came in handy as the editor of an alternative weekly.

“He was great in a crisis, calming everybody down,” she says. “He will be greatly missed.”

Schindler joined Folio Weekly in 1995, about six months after Snell came on board. She formerly worked for the now-closed Twin Cities Reader in Minneapolis under David Carr. The Maryland native received a journalism degree from the University of Wisconsin.

“Bob has done a wonderful job bringing this paper to a whole new level,” Schindler says.

“Although Bob will be greatly missed, Folio Weekly remains committed to being Northeast Florida’s best arts, entertainment, news and opinion source,” Taylor says. “We wish Bob well, and thank him for many great years.”
