The Texas Observer has re-hired alt-weekly veteran Brad Tyer as managing
editor. Tyer had previously served as the Observer‘s managing editor from 2008
through late 2009, and as copy editor from 2011 through late 2012. He replaces
outgoing managing editor Susan Smith Richardson, who leaves to pursue
independent projects and a teaching position at Texas State University.

“Brad is a terrific writer and editor,” said Observer Editor Dave Mann. “He knows
Texas, and he knows what makes the Observer a special publication. We’ll really
benefit from his eye for good stories and his talent for telling those stories.”

Tyer’s previous AAN experience includes stints as music editor and staff writer
(1991-2002) at his hometown alt-weekly Houston Press, and editor (2002-2007)
of the Missoula Independent. His recent freelance work has been
published in Outside, High Country News, The Drake, Montana Headwall, and
other venues. He was awarded a 2010 Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship, a
2011 Fishtrap writing residency, and a 2011 grant from the Fund for Investigative
Journalism. His first book–Opportunity, Montana: Big Copper, Bad Water, and
the Burial of an American Landscape–will be published by Beacon Press on
March 26, 2013.

The Texas Observer, published monthly, has been Texas’ “Journal of Free
Voices” since 1954, focusing on Texas news, politics and culture.
