Programming kicks off at 9 a.m. on Thursday, February 5 with an editorial workshop on media and the police. During this session, the Electronic Frontier Foundation will will detail all the surveillance tools police now use and share tips on how journalists can protect witnesses and information from such surveillance. The workshop will also feature a reporters’ roundtable discussion on best practices for covering protests and cautionary tales from the field.

The business track begins at 9:30 a.m. with a 2.5 hour training session, Social Selling for Audience and Advertiser Growth, led by Amie Stein of the Local Media Association. Stein’s workshop will explore how evolving your team’s ability to navigate a variety of social selling tactics will improve both their sales activity, the quality of their sales process and the ability to engage with your organization’s audience. In a nutshell, how to drive revenue with higher performing teams.

Other highlights from this year’s conference are:

  • A keynote talk by Kara Swisher, co-CEO and co-executive editor of Re/code. Swisher was previously a technology columnist for the Wall Street Journal’s All Things Digital.

  • A keynote by Cenk Uygur, host and co-founder of the internet news show The Young Turks which averages over 1.5 million views per day on YouTube.

  • Chartbeat’s Stephanie Brower will discuss the value of capturing visitors’ attention, measuring on-page engagement, and understanding the correlation between the time people spend onsite and their propensity to return and recall information.

  • PBS Mediashift executive editor Mark Glaser will talk about the current state of crowdfunding, what campaigns work best in the journalism space, and when crowdfunding won’t be your best answer.
