Newspapers seeking membership in the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies can now obtain application forms and instructions from the AAN national office. The application deadline is March 5, 2004.
To qualify, applicant newspapers must be editorially distinct, publish excellent journalism dedicated to public service, provide a positive alternative to mainstream journalism, and be of a quality that will strengthen the character of the association.
Each application will be considered by AAN’s Admissions Committee. Its recommendations will be presented to the general membership at the beginning of the 2004 AAN Annual Convention, which will take place in San Antonio, Texas, from June 24 to 27. Member newspapers will vote on each application during the annual meeting, which is held on the last day of the convention. A two-thirds majority vote is required for admission.
To receive application materials and instructions, contact AAN at 1020 16th Street NW, 4th Floor, Washington, DC 20036-5702, (202) 822-1955. For an explanation of the admissions process, click here.
