In April 2005, AAN News reported the closing of MetroBeat in Greenville, S.C. At the time, Editor James Shannon pledged to continue the publication as an online magazine, and he's made good on that pledge. Now he's about to give Greenville an old-fashioned, ink-on-paper alt-weekly once again. From Shannon's announcement at www.metrobeat.net: "Since the demise of MetroBeat ... we have continued the conversation with our readers through this website. That will not change, but now there will be The Beat, an actual newspaper you can hold in your hands." It's due to hit streets July 19.
In her collection of essays, "She's Got Next," Melissa King recalls the Reader as "the forefront of the possibility trade." As this review explains, King's stint in Chicago "launched her on a yearslong search for life's meaning within the confines of a basketball court."
