Isthmus news editor Bill Lueders has received a Genesis Award from the Humane Society of the United States for his reporting on animal issues. Lueders was honored for his reporting on animal research at the UW-Madison, including his story about a 5-year-old primate named ro4040 and his articles on decompression experiments involving sheep. "It was a great honor for me and for Isthmus," says Lueders, whose article on primate research was excerpted in the award booklet for the star-studded ceremony in Beverly Hills.
Steve Delgado has left his post with Portico Publications to relocate to Los Angeles this summer. Delgado has been with the company, which owns AAN members C-VILLE Weekly, Free Times and Metro Spirit, since 2002, serving as publisher, vice president and, most recently, president. At last year's AAN Convention, he was also elected to the Board of Directors as chair of the Design & Production Committee. "The last eight years with Portico have been an exciting time in my life and it was a very difficult decision to leave the company," Delgado says in a statement. "The people who make go are immensely talented and I will miss working with them every day. I'm looking forward to finding a group on the left coast with an equal amount moxie that can bring out my best."
SF Weekly's debut of a new four-color glossy cover this week makes it the sixth Village Voice Media Holdings (VVMH) print publication to adopt the sleek, magazine-style format, and the company plans on rolling out glossy covers at all of its publications within the next eighteen to 24 months, according to a release. "The glossy is the next step in our evolution," president and chief operating officer Scott Tobias says in a statement.
After nearly 14 years apart, the Alternative Weekly Network (AWN) and the Sacramento News & Review are once again sharing office space, as AWN has moved into the News & Review's new green building. "We are returning to where it all began," AWN executive director Mark Hanzlik says. Hanzlik adds that in addition to the physical move, the company is currently retooling the AWN website, and upgrading some of the operational processes of the cooperative.
Chris Keating, who was most recently publisher at the San Antonio Current, has been named the new publisher at Times Shamrock sister paper the Cleveland Scene. Replacing Keating in San Antonio will be Michael Wagner, a former publisher of the Riverfront Times. He will take the title of general manager.
Starting with this week's issue, SF Weekly is becoming the latest alt-weekly to go with a high-quality glossy cover. "We feel that this attractive new format will increase the visibility of our cover stories and award-winning journalism," publisher Josh Fromson and editor Tom Walsh say in a release. "The upgrade also shows that SF Weekly continues to invest in its print product."
Village Voice Media Holdings, LLC announced today that it has partnered with happy-hour guide GoTime to launch a mobile app detailing more than 15,000 happy hour deals in 30 cities across the country. Users can search happy hours by name, location, time and even type of cuisine, all within one location-aware mobile application."We want to be everywhere our readers are, and that's out on the town, anywhere in the country," VVMH president and COO Scott Tobias says in a release.
