Stories from five AAN-member papers and one series that ran in several papers have been named finalists in this year’s Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) journalism contest.
The Long Island Press , Phoenix New Times, Seattle Weekly and the Village Voice accounted for all four finalists in the “local circulation weeklies” category. The winner in that category was an investigative report into New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s off-shore tax havens by the New York Observer.
Elsewhere in the contest, LA Weekly was a finalist for the prestigious Tom Renner Award, which focuses on coverage of organized crime or other criminal acts.
And former North Bay Boheman staffer Peter Byrne was a finalist in the partnership/collaboration category for a Spot.Us-affiliated series on the University of California Regents that ran in the Bohemian, the Sacramento News & Review and Santa Cruz Weekly, among other non-AAN papers.
