Celeste Fraser Delgado was arrested on Nov. 20, 2003 while covering protests during the Free Trade Area of the Americas ministerial meetings in downtown Miami. On Thursday--the two-year anniversary of the event--the ACLU filed three lawsuits, including one on Delgado's behalf, charging that police officers had used excessive force to intimidate and unlawfully arrest innocent bystanders and protesters. Delgado, who wrote a 2700-word article about her experience, is no longer with Miami New Times.
Restaurant Reviewer Jim Dixon is under fire for his negative review of Portland's Castagna. Dixon summarized his own review thusly: "So what's my problem? In a word: salt." The restaurant owners then sent a 50-pound salt lick and a letter to the editor drawing attention to Dixon's side business importing and selling sea salt. Willamette Week's Nov. 2 issue contains two letters slamming Dixon and editor Kelly Clarke, as well as a lengthy response from Dixon in which he announces that a disclaimer will be added to future reviews. The commotion has been sufficient to draw the attention of the Portland Tribune.
Amy Gill's primary responsibility will be the association's aan.org Web site. She comes to AAN from the Gulf Restoration Network, an environmental advocacy nonprofit where she had been the director of operations. She was also previously a staff writer at Impact News/Southern Voice, a New Orleans-based GLBT weekly.
The first Best of Eugene Awards show was held last Saturday, says Director of Sales and Marketing Bill Shreve. Local celebrities presented glass plaques to the winners, and musical entertainment was provided. The money raised was donated to Food for Lane County, which won the Favorite Nonprofit award.
A 33 percent increase in the monthly traffic count enabled AAN's collaborative news site to pass the quarter-million mark in unique visitors. AltWeeklies.com traffic has increased exponentially since April, when the number of unique visitors was less than 10,000. Most of that growth has come from AAN members who run AltWeeklies.com teasers, which have also increased traffic on their own sites.
You may have heard by now that Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast on the same day that Gambit Weekly's "Best of New Orleans" issue was scheduled to be delivered. But you probably didn't know that Houston Press' "Best of Houston" was due to go to press this week, but was forced to close early in advance of Hurricane Rita. Mere coincidence? Not according to the members of the editorial committee, who see in these two natural disasters nothing less than God's wrath against special issues and the publishers who demand them.
