Jack Harper, a Republican state senator, subpoenaed ballots from a contested 2004 legislative race so that a computer science professor hired by New Times could review them, the Arizona Daily Star reported. The consultant reportedly planned to release his findings directly to the newspaper. The county treasurer is opposing this arrangement, and a superior court judge has set a hearing for the second week of January to hear arguments on the legality of the subpoena.

The Boston Society of Film Critics dedicated their Dec. 11 awards to Robin Dougherty, who was a critic for the Phoenix from 1985 to 1995. After leaving Boston, Dougherty wrote for several publications, including the Miami and Broward-Palm Beach editions of New Times. Dougherty passed away earlier this year after a battle with cancer.

Phoenix contributing writer Lance Tapley's two-part article on the Special Management Unit or "Supermax" inside Maine State Prison, published Nov. 11 and Nov. 18, exposed conditions resembling torture. One of the Phoenix's sources provided a prison videotape showing a man being stripped, placed in a restraint chair and sprayed repeatedly in the face. The Phoenix has now posted three 30-second clips from the videotape on its Web site, "to bring public attention to the internal workings of Maine Supermax and similar correctional facilities across the nation." The video clips are in Quicktime format.
