Miami New Times' Lee Klein and Seattle Weekly's Jonathan Kauffman finished first in the Newspaper and Internet categories, respectively, in this year's Bert Greene Awards. In addition, the Austin Chronicle's MM Pack was a finalist in the Newspaper category. The awards, which are organized by the International Association of Culinary Professionals, "recognize excellence in food journalism." Winners were announced last weekend in Denver.
The papers won a total of 24 awards in the New York Press Association's annual Better Newspaper Contest. Long Island Press won eight awards, including the Sharon R. Fulmer Award for Community Leadership and first-place wins for Coverage of Elections/Politics, Feature Story, Headline Writing, and In-Depth Reporting. Syracuse New Times and the Ithaca Times won five awards each, with New Times taking first for Advertising Excellence, Special Holiday Edition and Sports Action Photo and the Times placing first for Coverage of the Environment and Coverage of Local Government. The New York Press also won six awards.
Earlier this week, we noted that a piece in the Fort Worth Weekly had won a 2008 Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Award in the local-circulation weeklies category, but we neglected to mention that four other alt-weekly stories were IRE finalists. In the local-circulation weeklies category, Phoenix New Times' John Dickerson had two stories place, while the Houston Press' Chris Vogel had one. In addition, L.A. Weekly's Christine Pelisek was the runner-up for the Tom Renner Award, which is specifically for crime reporting.
Publisher Alan Leveritt said yesterday that about a third of the 41 people who work at the Times and the company's other publications will see temporary pay reductions of 4-7 percent starting next month. Lower paid employees were exempt from the cuts. The paper says it also recently laid off a receptionist and converted a full-time job on El Latino, its Spanish language weekly, to part-time.
AAN members are once again well-represented in the list of nominees for this year's James Beard Foundation Awards for Journalism. The finalists: L.A. Weekly's Pulitzer-prize winning critic Jonathan Gold in the Restaurant Reviews; Kristen Hinman of Riverfront Times in Newspaper Feature Writing Without Recipes; and the Chicago Reader's Mike Sula in Multimedia Food Journalism. Winners will be announced at a May 4 gala in New York.
Columbia Free Times won nine 2008 South Carolina Press Association awards, and Charleston City Paper won five. City Paper placed first in four categories (Feature Writing, General News Photo, Lifestyle Feature Writing and Photo Series or Photo Story), while Free Times took home first-place wins in three categories (Critical Writing, Illustration and Reporting in Depth). The awards were officially announced at the association's winter meeting last weekend.
The alt-weekly recently published on its blog a state database containing the names and addresses of Arkansans who hold permits to carry concealed handguns, but after an uproar from gun lobby and death threats made against Times editor Max Brantley and his family, the paper took the database down. Not long after, the state House of Representatives introduced and passed by a 98-1 vote a bill that would prohibit revealing "the identities or other information concerning concealed handgun licensees." Sponsors of the bill argued that doing so put handgun owners at risk.
The State Bar has dismissed the final two complaints pending against Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, including one about his handling of the 2007 investigation of Phoenix New Times that ended with the arrests of Village Voice Media executive editor Michael Lacey and CEO Jim Larkin. "No one in their right mind has ever looked to the Arizona Bar as a beacon of courage, and it has certainly upheld its longstanding reputation with this dismissal today," Larkin says.
The families that own and operate the Scranton-based company have taken a 10 percent haircut, and other managers in the chain will see their salaries decline by 3 to 5 percent. Co-publisher and CEO Scott Lynett tells AP that the deteriorating economy forced the company to make cuts, which also include employee buyouts at four of its papers in Pennsylvania. Times-Shamrock owns five AAN papers: Baltimore City Paper, Detroit's Metro Times, Orlando Weekly, San Antonio Current and Cleveland's Scene.
