Washington City Paper Columnist Wins James Beard Award

Todd Kliman receives honors for Young and Hungry column

WASHINGTON — May 4, 2005 — Last evening, Washington City Paper’s Young and Hungry columnist Todd Kliman received the James Beard Award in the category of newspaper column at the 15th Annual James Beard Foundation Awards ceremony and reception. The James Beard Award is the Oscar of the food-writing industry, awarded annually to recognize excellence in food and beverage journalism for articles published in the United States and Canada.

The award is a first for the Washington City Paper and for Kliman, who began his career as a food writer in 2001 and completed his first full year as a columnist in 2004.

“Todd impressed me with his encyclopedic knowledge of the local dining scene, his tireless drive to discover new places to eat, his graceful writing, and his insistence on looking at the whole culture of selling and consuming food,” says Leonard Roberge, Washington City Paper Arts Editor. “His reviews have always encompassed much more than what happens when you sit down somewhere.”

You can find Kliman’s Young & Hungry column in the weekly restaurant section of the Washington City Paper or go to Restaurant Finder at www.washingtoncitypaper.com to read the latest reviews. For more info on the James Beard Foundation and for a list of all award winners, see www.jamesbeard.org.
