Here’s another “alt-weeklies are clueless” story, from The Awl, regarding which, we may or may not be very fond of. But the supposed crime against journalism here, unlike those committed by the infamous Blog Empire That We Try Not To Mention, which actively encourages sensationalism and the “new yellow journalism,” was instead committed by the New Times Broward-Palm Beach and Miami New Times, who knew very well that a story had emotional appeal and, like, went out to report on it and interviewed people and did some actual research and then spent a couple hours turning it into a compelling narrative. So basically you can cool it on the four sentences of frothy outrage and talk of “weird pageview whoring”—the paper had an emotional story about a baby that died in a car and they ran with it and paginated it in order to maximize pageviews. That seems unsurprising.
