One of the Weekly Planet’s editors, John Sugg, will leave Tampa in late August to become senior editor at the company’s flagship paper, Atlanta’s Creative Loafing.
Sugg shares the title of editor with Susan Edwards at the Weekly Planet and will share many editorial duties with Atlanta’s Editor Ken Edelstein.
Senior editor “in our lexicon means that I’ll be the lead writer and that I’ll be building and leading the writing team,” Sugg says. “What I like to do best is write and work with reporters, so that’s basically what I’ll be doing there.”
Sugg says Creative Loafing is already “one of the standout alternatives in the nation in terms of editorial quality.”
Sugg wants to help increase Atlanta’s circulation from 160,000 to more than 200,000 by honing the existing talented news staff, he says.
“Ken Edelstein is the editor, and a damn fine one,” Sugg says in an e-mail to AAN News. “I’m second on the masthead, not first. Our goal is to make Atlanta not only our own showcase paper for editorial excellence, but we arrogantly hope, a paragon for the industry.”
Sugg says he and Edwards are looking for a replacement, although that person’s exact title and duties, other than writing, have not been determined.
