Burlington, Vt. – Seven Days has hired Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jeff Good to be a co-editor in charge of news content. He comes to Vermont’s largest newsweekly from the Valley News, which serves the Upper Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire. Over the course of 13 years, Good served as the paper’s capital bureau chief, news editor, managing editor and editor of its 32-person newsroom. Under his direction, the daily won numerous regional and national awards and became a training ground for promising young reporters, photographers and editors.
A 1981 graduate of St. Michael’s College, Good started his journalism career as an intern at the Vermont Vanguard Press and worked as a writer and editor for Ralph Nader in Washington, D.C. He went on to spend 12 years at Florida’s St. Petersburg Times, where he won a 1995 Pulitzer Prize in editorial writing for a series on abuses in state probate courts that combined investigative reporting and opinion writing. He served as capital bureau chief at the Burlington Free Press from 1996 to 1999 and returned to St. Michael’s College for a brief stint teaching journalism and writing about the college’s history.
Over the years, Good has contributed articles to The New York Times, Boston Globe and Washington Journalism Review. He is also co-author of Poison Mind, a non-fiction book about a Florida murder case.
“Jeff’s got the whole package: He’s an elegant writer, a rigorous editor and an effective and encouraging coach,†says publisher and co-editor Paula Routly, who has served as interim news editor since July. “The Seven Days newsroom will certainly benefit from his talent and experience.â€
Associate publisher and co-editor Pamela Polston concurs. “Seven Days is still fully committed to arts and culture reporting, and that won’t change,†says Polston. “Jeff is going to grow our news coverage. His extensive background makes him an exciting addition to our team.â€
The timing couldn’t be better, says Good. He and his wife, Laura Dintino, met as students at St. Michael’s. Their children, Amelia and Alex, are in college and the couple looks forward to returning to Burlington to live and work.
“I’ve had a great 13 years at the Valley News and I will miss working with my talented colleagues,†Good said. “But this job represents an opportunity to grow in new ways. The founders and staff of Seven Days have established the paper and its website as a must-read in Vermont, the state that is my heart’s home. At a time when many news organizations are struggling, it is soaring. How could I resist?â€
Good will join the staff of Seven Days on October 30.
