New Mass. Media Commits to Green Power

Advocate Weekly newspapers first in U.S. to use renewable energy

Today, Fran Zankowski, CEO of New Mass. Media, and Larry Union, General Manager of the Connecticut Energy Cooperative (The Co-op), jointly announced that for one month, beginning with the Earth Day publication, the Co-op will offset New Mass. Media’s total production runs with Co-op Green Energy Certificates, which are New England-based renewable energy tags produced from wind, water and recovered methane.

“Given all our nation’s attention to energy, it became apparent to all of us at New Mass. Media, that we needed to walk the walk,” Fran Zankowski said. “We now have a choice to support cleaner renewable energy sources and we felt this was an appropriate thing to do beginning with our Earth Day edition.”

New Mass. Media publishes the Hartford Advocate, The New Haven Advocate, The Fairfield County Weekly and the Valley Advocate. They are Connecticut’s leading weekly news, arts and entertainment alternative newspapers with combined circulation of 244,000.

“New Mass. Media becomes the first newspaper in the United States to commit to renewable power,” Larry Union of the CT Energy Co-op said. “Their commitment provides a great boost to raising awareness about renewable power options available to consumers.”

Anyone who pays a power bill can switch to New England-based renewable electricity from wind, water and recovered methane by calling the Co-op at 888-481-3955 or visiting the Co-op’s web site at www.EnergyForMe.com
