Three alt-weekly food writers — and one alt-weekly videographer — were named winners of the 2011 James Beard Foundation Awards on Friday night.
Tim Carman’s work with Washington City Paper was recognized as the best Food-Related Column and Commentary, beating out scribes for Grist and the Wall Street Journal.
Michael Gebert and Julia Thiel of the Chicago Reader beat out worm-eater Andrew Zimmern in the Multimedia Food Feature category for their video series, Key Ingredient, in which chefs are challenged to come up with a recipe using an obscure ingredient.
And no list of food journalism award winners would be complete without a nod to the L.A. Weekly‘s Jonathan Gold, who won the M.F.K. Fisher Distinguished Writing Award for his guide to 99 essential Los Angeles restaurants, “A Moveable Beast.”
