AAN Offers Freelance Contract Advice

Alice Neff Lucan prepares template clauses

AAN’s attorney, Alice Neff Lucan, has prepared an advisory memo for publishers on freelance contracts.

The memo offers advice and draft language for contracts with freelance writers and artists and primarily addresses copyright and news-gathering issues.

Lucan, however, advises that an in-state attorney review all such contracts because of the variation in contract law from state to state.

“ We hope these collected clauses will mean that local counsel does not have to draft your contracts from scratch and you will be able to save on the amount charged in fees,” Lucan writes in the memo.

It is being mailed to publishers today and can also be downloded from the Business of Publishing section of the aan.org Web site.
