AAN Papers Dominate CNPA Awards

Six Members Garner 22 Awards.

AAN papers took 12 first place and 10 second place awards in the 1998 California Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspaper Contest (weeklies with circulation of 25,001 and up):

The San Luis Obispo New Times led the pack with firsts in Public Service, Feature Story, Columnists-Commentary-Criticism, Sports Story, and Arts and Entertainment Coverage (no circulation bvreakdown). The paper took second place in Environmental Reporting and Special Issue.

New Times Los Angeles received first place for Environmental Reporting and second for Investigative Reporting.

The San Francisco Bay Guardian won a first place award for General Excellence.

SF Weekly garnered a first for Investigative Story and a second for Feature Story.

The Sacramento News & Review took a first in Display Advertising and a second in Design.

The Palo Alto Weekly scored firsts in Design, Editorial Commentary and Spot News – Reporting, and seconds in Spot News – Photograph and Arts and Entertainment Coverage (no circulation breakdown).

The Santa Barbara Independent notched 3 second place nods in Lifestyle Coverage, Front Page and Classified Advertising.

Winners were announced June 30.
