Editorial Change at City Paper

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

PHILADELPHIA (March 10, 2002) — Paul Curci, publisher of Philadelphia City Paper, announces that effective March 29, 2003, Howard Altman will assume the role of editor in chief at Philadelphia’s leading weekly newspaper.

Altman succeeds David Warner, who has worked at the paper for 15 years, the last five as editor. Warner freelanced for City Paper before being hired as managing editor in 1987. He was promoted to editor in 1998, and to editor in chief in 2002 following a year as a National Arts Journalism Fellow at Columbia University. David and partner, Larry Biddle, are moving to Burlington, Vt., where Biddle will be working as deputy national finance director for the Howard Dean presidential campaign.

“David has done a rock solid job at City Paper,” says Curci. “His impact has been immeasurable. We were very lucky to have had him here for so long. He’s been a reliable editor, confidante and friend, and we’ll all miss him tremendously.”

“I’ve had a wonderful time editing the City Paper all these years,” says Warner, “and I’ll truly miss my colleagues, my friends and the city itself, particularly its extraordinary arts community. But when my partner got the job with the Dean campaign, we felt it was too good an opportunity to pass up and decided to make the move to Vermont.”

Altman started his career at City Paper eight years ago as news editor and was promoted to executive editor in June 2002. Altman’s investigative reporting skills have earned him international recognition.

“I am deeply honored and absolutely stoked to be able to lead a staff with so much talent,” says Altman.

The team of Altman and Warner has produced award-winning journalism that has elevated City Paper to its current status as one of the nation’s most respected alternative newsweeklies.

“I’m excited about the future,” says Curci. “Altman is a journalistic force. He has a powerful voice and a deep understanding of the principles and ethics that guide this paper — and he knows how to win.”
