Where were you in 1981? If you were publishers Michael Hollett and Alice Klein, you were putting together the first issue of NOW Magazine.

Twenty-five years later, NOW has become one of Canada’s most vital independent media successes, distributing 121,000 free copies every Thursday and reaching 395,000 weekly readers.

To celebrate its milestone, NOW has published a massive 25th Anniversary supplement within its regular issue on streets and online this Thursday, November 9th.

The supplement features timelines from 1981 to the present, including notable quotes, year-by-year Top 10 albums and movies, NOW hits and misses, along with local and international timelines. The supplement also features the winning design in NOW’s Designer Challenge, which had 10 finalists creating a garment out of NOW newsprint.

As editor/publisher Michael Hollett states, “NOW Magazine remains part of the independent spirit, handmade mass media with more readers than even our most optimistic dreams would have promised when we started the paper 25 years ago.”

The 25th Anniversary issue caps off a year of anniversary events, which included the Indie Unlimited Festival at Harbourfront, distribution of 20,000 retro cover buttons throughout the summer, a photo retrospective at Harbourfront Centre, the NXNE Indie Music Market at Yonge Dundas Square, the publication of the travel guide book, “Toronto: The Essential Guide To The Best Of The City” and a bash for over 1000 guests at the Phoenix Concert Theatre.
