Subject: New appointments

I am pleased to announce the appointments of Andy Sutcliffe and Janet Reynolds to the positions of Group Publishers beginning the first of the year, 2003. Andy will be responsible for the New Haven Advocate and the Fairfield County Weekly. Janet will head up the Valley and Hartford Advocates.

These appointments further assist in the re-organization of New Mass. Media, Inc. into a more streamlined and efficient publishing house. Through the implementing of various software and business procedures, reducing our overhead, and sharing more of our resources this past year we have brought our papers into closer alignment one with the other. These moves have greatly aided in our overall return to profitability. With today’s appointments, our company will further reap the benefits of a greater sharing of resources.

Andy Sutcliffe joined the Valley Advocate in November 2000 as Publisher. His leadership in the Valley has brought the paper to increased revenues and ever larger papers. Just last year, Andy also became the publisher of the Fairfield County Weekly. Maintaining a grueling schedule of driving between the two offices, Andy also propelled the Weekly to profitability this year for the first time in nearly 18 years. His impressive credentials as the CEO of DesertNet and the President of TPI in Boston, first brought him recognition throughout our industry. Now he is known as one of the top-flight publishers in the alternative press. He and his wife Erica, plus cats and dog, plan on moving to the Branford shoreline by January 1.

Janet Reynolds, a longtime member of New Mass. Media, first joined the Hartford Advocate as the part-time listings editor. In the 15 years she has been with us, Janet has served as reporter, editor and publisher of the paper. Having won numerous awards for her writing, Janet left the paper for a couple of years, returning as the editor in 1998.She is one of the instructors at the AAN Medill Newspaper Conference held each fall in Chicago. And, she is recognized in our industry as an important editorial voice. Recently she was named publisher of Preview Connecticut magazine. In her spare time she is the President of Farmington Valley Symphony (first cello) and writes reviews for Publishers Weekly. In rare moments she resides in Canton with her husband Peter, children Rachel, Garret and Sam, along with their dog Sophie.

Please join me in wishing Andy and Janet much success in their newly increased roles as Group Publishers.
