ATLANTA — Creative Loafing, the Southeast’s largest alt-weekly, welcomes a new addition to its staff: Rodney Carmichael, music editor.

Carmichael’s most recent post was as senior writer for Rolling Out UrbanStyle Weekly, an entertainment publication based in Atlanta with hubs in several metro areas including Miami, Chicago and New York.

During his three years at Rolling Out, Carmichael served as a writing coach and mentor, and covered a range of celebrities including Quincy Jones, Andre 3000 of OutKast, and Rick James, and several star-studded events, such as the MTV, BET and Billboard music awards. A Georgia native and graduate of Georgia State University, Carmichael won a Poynter Fellowship for Young Journalists in 2000.

Arts and Entertainment Editor David Lee Simmons is confident that Carmichael will take the music section to the next level, especially with his strong interest in CL’s blogging and podcasting capabilities. “Rodney impressed us with his varied experience both personally and professionally, his fondness for narrative storytelling, his varied musical interests, and his vision for the music section,” Simmons said. “He also is just a great guy to be around, as I’m sure the staff will see.”
