Sacramento News & Review Launches Legal Defense Fund

Sacramento News & Review has launched a GoFundMe campaign aimed at offsetting legal costs associated with Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson’s lawsuit against the paper. Co-editor Rachel Leibrock explains:

Lawsuits aren’t cheap, of course, and our lawyer doesn’t work pro bono—unlike K.J.’s. So far, we’ve racked up a hefty legal bill and expect it to keep growing, likely in excess of $30,000 … It feels strange asking for help. But it also feels very, very necessary.

If the campaign surpasses its goal of $30,000, the paper says any excess funds will go towards future Freedom of Information Act and California Public Records Act journalistic activities.
