More than 250 performances -- "an all-time high for the event," reports the Detroit Free Press -- will highlight the Motor City alt-weekly's 10th annual Blowout music festival March 7-10. The Detroit News says Blowout is "considered by local artists to be the most important local music event of the year."
Metro Silicon Valley and North Bay Bohemian report this week that Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s husband was a major beneficiary of military appropriations blessed by a subcommittee that she headed, parent company Metro Newspapers announced today in a press release. Feinstein (D-Calif.) approved billions of dollars in military construction expenditures awarded to two firms that were controlled by an investment group headed by the senator’s spouse, financier Richard C. Blum, according to the investigative story by Metro's Peter Byrne. The story "examines the many ways in which Sen. Feinstein committed repeated breaches of ethics as (the subcommittee) chairwoman or ranking member from 2001-2005," according to the release.
Brian Conley, and his wife, Patricia Conley, spent an evening in a Knox County jail after being arrested Saturday night on charges relating to public intoxication, reports the local daily. After leaving a Christmas party, the Conley's vehicle was stopped by Knoxville Police. When the police arrested Mr. Conley for public drunkenness, his wife "became combative and interfered with the arrest," according to court records. She was subsequently arrested for disorderly conduct. "The Conleys do dispute the events as they are stated in the incident report," says their attorney, who adds that Brian Conley "did the responsible thing by having his wife drive after the party."
After writing about Detroit's cultural underground for seven years, Sarah Klein has developed a "hate-hate" relationship with the city and has decided to flee it for the sunny climes of California. "People are leaving Detroit -- in droves," she says, driven away by crime, lack of city services and a bad economy. Although she loves the Motor City and its "incredible people," she has had enough: "I'm tired of struggling, and I'm exhausted -- emotionally and physically. I'm ready to go."
So says Metro Times founder Ron Williams, recalling the recently deceased journalist "who made an important contribution to the newspaper in its formative years." Kaplan was the Detroit alt-weeklies' news editor from 1989 to 1991, when "she wrote about urban issues with ... gritty detail," according to the paper. The 53-year-old writer and University of Washington assistant professor died last month of an apparent heart attack.
