Dan Williamson will take over as Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman's spokesman on June 2, according to Columbus Business First. Williamson, who the mayor called "one of the sharpest political observers and writers in Ohio," will oversee a two-member staff and coordinate communications for 13 departments in his new role.
The City Paper took home 10 2008 Golden Quill Awards, which were announced at a reception last night. The alt-weekly finished first in five categories -- Business reporting, Criticism, Cultural reporting, Enterprise/Investigative, and Sports -- and was also a finalist in five categories. The competition "recognizes professional excellence in written, photographic, broadcast and online journalism in Western Pennsylvania."
Philadelphia City Paper today announced the details of the evening festivities at this year's AAN Convention, and, as always, there will be plenty to ingest, imbibe and experience as attendees catch up with their AAN colleagues. From the opening night "Get on Board the Love Train" reception, featuring food from some of Philly's most well-regarded restaurants, to a closing night party across the street from where the U.S. Constitution was drafted, City Paper has our party needs covered. Other events include a restaurant and pub crawl through the hip environs of an historic neighborhood known as Northern Liberties, and a Saturday afterparty for about 75 attendees at The Roots Family Picnic. More afterparties are in the works -- be sure to check the Convention website for details.
The Dallas Observer's Megan Feldman and Jesse Hyde, Phoenix New Times' John Dickerson, and Washington City Paper's Dave Jamieson are among this year's Livingston Award finalists. The contest awards three $10,000 prizes for Local, National, and International Reporting to journalists under the age of 35. The winners will be announced on June 4.
Both the Philadelphia City Paper and Philadelphia Weekly took home plenty of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association's 2008 Keystone Press Awards. City Paper's Tom Namako and Doron Taussig placed first and second, respectively, in the speciality category of Distinguished Writing in a Weekly. The Weekly won the Sweepstakes award for the division in which alt-weeklies are eligible. In competition within that division, the Weekly won 11 awards, including first-place finishes in Feature Story, Headline Writing, News Feature Story, News Photo, and Online Journalistic Innovation. City Paper also nabbed 11 awards in that division, including first-place wins in Business or Consumer Story, Column, Investigative Reporting, and News Beat Reporting.
In a farewell column this week, Danny Russell says he's leaving to do PR and marketing for Delaware's Methodist Theological School in Ohio. He's been with the Columbus, Ohio, paper since its inception in 1990.
The Village Voice Media executive editor's Friday night utterance of the "n-word" continues to be discussed in media circles and on the internet. Maricopa County attorney Andrew Thomas, who may be sued by Phoenix New Times soon, criticized Lacey's comments at a press conference on Tuesday, saying "this should be the Don Imus moment for Arizona's media," KTVK-TV reports. KTVK-TV also has the full video of the acceptance speech in which the offending comment was made. And Philadelphia City Paper publisher Paul Curci is weighing in as well, calling Lacey's comments "vicious and hateful" in an incensed letter to AAN News.
AAN News has been informed that staff writer Chris Landers won the 2008 A.D. Emmart Award for his story on a man who was wrongly accused as a sex offender. In addition, City Paper contributor Laura Laing won one of two honorable mentions for "Raising a Glass."
The South Carolina Press Association announced the winners of its 2007 news excellence competition Friday, and two AAN members were among the papers that were honored. Columbia Free Times finished first in three categories, including Mixed Media Illustration in the competition division open to all papers. In the weeklies division, Free Times swept the Illustrations category, placing first, second, and third; and took home a first-place award in Sports Column Writing. It also took home one additional second-place and one third-place award. The Charleston City Paper placed first in two categories -- Best Beat Reporting and General News Photo. City Paper also won one second-place and one third-place award.
